multifurcation
a node in a tree that connects more than three branches. If the tree is rooted or directed, one branch represents the ancestral lineage and the other branches descendent lineages. A multifurcation often results because of a lack of data to resolve the branches although it could be the simultaneous splitting of several lineages. Also called polytomy
